Making Real Friends in a Club of 300 People
There is a paradox that often comes with being part of a large organization: you are surrounded by people, yet somehow still find yourself on the outside looking in. You attend the big events, you smile for the group photos, but at the end of the day you are not sure you have truly connected with anyone. AZIT understands this better than most, and the Mini Mates program was created precisely to solve it. Mini Mates brings members together in small groups for simple, everyday activities — a meal, a café visit, a game of badminton — with one purpose: to give people the space and time to genuinely get to know each other.
Mini Mates runs multiple times throughout the semester and is primarily organized around Korean members taking the lead in inviting and welcoming international exchange students into their everyday lives. There is no formal agenda and no pressure to perform. The program is intentionally low-key, because the kind of friendship that lasts is the kind that forms quietly — over a shared plate of food, over a cup of coffee, over a board game that goes on longer than anyone planned. It is in these unhurried, unscripted moments that people stop being acquaintances and start being friends.
Activities vary depending on the group and the day. Options include shared meals at local restaurants near Inha University, café gatherings, sports activities such as badminton or bowling, study sessions, and board game nights. For members interested in language exchange, Mini Mates naturally becomes an informal setting for practicing Korean and English with each other — far more effective and far more enjoyable than any structured language class. Many members who initially joined simply to practice a language have walked away with friendships that outlasted the semester by years.
The Mini Mates program also reflects one of AZIT's core values: making sure that no member feels invisible. In a club of hundreds of people, it is easy for quieter or more introverted members — or those who simply haven't found their footing yet — to slip through the cracks. Mini Mates is designed to prevent that. AZIT's executive team actively monitors participation and reaches out to members who may not yet feel fully integrated, treating this program not just as a social activity but as a genuine care system for the wellbeing of every individual in the club.
To our exchange student members: coming to Korea and leaving without a single Korean friend would be a real shame. Mini Mates is AZIT's most sincere effort to make sure that doesn't happen to you. It doesn't matter if your Korean isn't perfect or if you're not sure what to talk about at first. Sit down, share a meal, and let the rest take care of itself. By the time you say goodbye at the Farewell Party, you'll know exactly who your people are.
