Just landed in Korea? Here's what'll trip you up first: paying for things. You grab lunch with classmates, and everyone's like, "Just send it on Toss." You try to order from Coupang – it won't go through. You try to take the subway, and all you've got is cash. The kicker? Your Alien Registration Card (ARC) takes 2 to 4 weeks to come through. So what are you going to do, carry cash for a month? Ask your friends to cover everything? Here's good news for you! Toss lets you sign up with just your passport. No Korean phone number, no Korean bank account. Literally just your passport. Why You Actually Need Toss Before Your ARC Without an ARC, opening a regular Korean bank account is basically a no-go. Shinhan, KB, Woori — they all want one. So without Toss, here's what's blocked for you: Splitting bills with friends? Nope. Paying club dues or school deposits? Can't. Online shopping on Olive Young, Coupang, Baemin? Mostly blocked. Subway and bus rides? Buying disposable T-money cards every single time. Friend covered your meal? No way to pay them back.

철학을 너무 어렵고 피상적인 이야기라고 생각하지않았으면 좋겠다는 취지로 글을 쓰게 되었습니다. 얘네도 사람이구나 하고 느끼셨으면 좋겠습니다. 똑똑한 사람들이 무슨 말을 하는지 들으며 공부하는 것은 재밌습니다. 여러분도 많은 관심을 가지고 세상을 바라보는 여러 방식을 탐구해보셨으면 좋겠습니다. 라파엘로 산치오의 역작, '아테네 학당' 그림을 보며 대표 철학자의 사상과 관련 일화를 간단히 알아보자. 가장 가운데에 한번쯤은 들어봤을 법한 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스가 있다. 플라톤은 손가락으로 하늘을 가리키고 아리스토텔레스는 땅을 내리누르는 모습이 인상적인데, 이 포즈는 각 인물의 사상을 담고 있다. 플라톤 사상의 핵심 주제는 '이데아'이다. 이데아란 모든 형상(물체, 사상, 생각 등)의 원본, 근원, 가장 본질적인 것이다. 그래서 이데아는 완벽하며 우리가 추구해야하는 것이 된다. 반면에 아리스토텔레스의 포즈는 진리는 바로 우리가 발 딛고 있는 현실 세계에 있다는 의미를 담고 있다. 자신의 스승 플라톤을 전면 반박하며, 현실에 있는 개별자들이 그 자체로 실체라고 보았다. 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스에 관한 재밌는 이야기들. 플라톤은 이름이 아니라 '넓은 어깨'라는 이명. 레슬링 선수 출신이라 실제로 몸도 좋았다고 한다. 플라톤은 소크라테스 사후 여행을 다니며 견문을 넓히며 자신의 사상을 구축해나갔는데, 그 중 '국가'를 저술하며 국가체계를 새로 만들어냈다. 실제로 시칠리아에 가서 자신의 철학 사상을 드리밀며, "이거 해보시죠"하고 강력 주장하다가 국가혼란죄로 잡혀가 노예로 팔리기도 한다...참고로 플라톤은 고대 그리스 고위 귀족이자 그 중에서도 탑으로 손꼽히는 부자이다...다행히 친구가 발견하여 거액의 돈을 주고 풀려나게 된다. 향후 2000년간 서양 철학을 먹여 살리는 인물의 비범함이 돋보인다. 아리스토텔레스는 훗날 세계를 정복한 알렉산드로스대왕의 스승이다. 소크라테스는 의외로 중심이 아닌 왼쪽 구석에서 사람들에게 둘러싸여 있다. 처음에 읭? 왜 4대 성인 중 한명이자, 자기 손으로 책 하나 안 쓰고 떠들기만 했는데도 제자들이 다 받아적어서 지금까지 회자되는 전설 중의 전설이 저런 구석에 있지? 싶었다.

Many people think that passing TOPIK with a high score means memorizing thousands of words and grammar points. Of course, vocabulary is important, but from my experience, the most important thing is getting used to real Korean. When I reached the pre-intermediate level, I started taking classes with a native Korean teacher. Honestly, at first it was very difficult. I could barely understand anything during the lessons and sometimes I just sat there completely confused. But over time, something changed. Even when I didn't understand every single word, I started understanding the main idea of conversations. And that is extremely important for TOPIK. You do not need to understand 100% of every sentence. You need to catch the meaning. Because of this habit, listening became my strongest section in TOPIK. I got my highest score in 듣기 (Listening). I believe that listening to Korean speech every day really helps your brain adapt naturally to the language. One thing I strongly recommend is studying with native speakers, especially from the pre-intermediate level and above. Even if it feels uncomfortable in the beginning, do not avoid it. The more you listen to natural Korean speech, the faster you improve.
